Annexin A13 is a calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding protein, primarily expressed in intestinal and kidney epithelial cells, especially in proliferating crypt epithelia and differentiated villus enterocytes[1][2][3][4]. Alternative splicing leads to distinct isoforms with differing subcellular localizations and membrane-binding requirements. The protein is localized to plasma membranes, specifically participating in apical transport in polarized cells — notably the apical region of villi in the intestine[1][2][3][5]. It is the most ancestral member ("founder gene") of the vertebrate annexin family, and may be implicated in raft-mediated delivery of membrane proteins, vesicle trafficking, and cellular differentiation, but its specific in vivo functions remain only partially understood[1][2][3][5]. There are no current drugs or biomarker uses involving annexin A13, and it is not established as a therapeutic target.
