Overview

Anoctamine 1 (ANO1), also known as Transmembrane Member 16A (TMEM16A), is a voltage-gated, calcium-activated anion channel that functions as a chloride and bicarbonate channel. It is widely expressed in smooth muscle, epithelial cells, vomeronasal neurons, olfactory sustentacular cells, and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). ANO1 plays a crucial role in transepithelial anion transport, smooth muscle contraction, and gastrointestinal motility. Dysregulation of ANO1 has been linked to polycystic kidney disease and cancer, making it a potential therapeutic target.
