Anterior cutaneous branch of thoracoabdominal nerve T11

01

Overview

The anterior cutaneous branch of thoracoabdominal nerve T11 is a distal sensory branch of the T11 intercostal nerve, which originates from the anterior ramus of the T11 thoracic spinal nerve. After traversing the abdominal wall, the T11 nerve gives off this branch near the midline, usually after piercing the rectus sheath, to provide segmental sensory innervation to the skin overlying the anterior abdominal wall at the T11 dermatome. It does not serve as a molecular therapeutic target, but is relevant for anatomical study and for clinical procedures such as regional anesthesia or surgical approaches involving the abdominal wall[1][3][5]. T11 is one of the lower thoracic vertebrae, and its nerve root travels through the corresponding intercostal space before giving branches[2][4][6]. The thoracoabdominal nerves (T7–T11), including T11, and their branches provide motor innervation to abdominal muscles and sensory innervation to the abdominal wall skin[1][3][5]. The anterior cutaneous branch specifically supplies the skin covering the rectus abdominis muscle in its segmental dermatome[1][3].
