Overview

The anterior nerve root, also known as the ventral nerve root, is the efferent motor component of the spinal nerve that emerges from the anterolateral sulcus of the spinal cord (StatPearls: Anatomy, Back, Spinal Cord). It is composed of axons from motor neurons located in the ventral horn that transmit signals to skeletal muscles, as well as preganglionic autonomic fibers (PubMed: PMID 30725674). Because it is a complex anatomical structure comprising various cell types and molecular components, it is not considered a singular molecular therapeutic target, though it is frequently the focus of clinical interventions such as nerve blocks or decompression surgeries (StatPearls: Spinal Nerve Radiculopathy). Pathological compression or degeneration of these roots results in motor deficits, muscle atrophy, and fasciculations, which are hallmark signs of radiculopathy or motor neuron diseases like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (NCBI: Bookshelf NBK546593). Drugs used in proximity to the anterior nerve root typically target voltage-gated sodium channels to inhibit pain or motor transmission, or utilize corticosteroids to mitigate inflammatory responses in the nerve environment (PubMed: PMID 26231260).
