The anterior pituitary cells, collectively forming the adenohypophysis, constitute the major endocrine component of the pituitary gland (StatPearls, 2023). These cells are specialized into distinct types—somatotrophs, lactotrophs, corticotrophs, thyrotrophs, and gonadotrophs—each responsible for synthesizing and secreting specific hormones like growth hormone, prolactin, and ACTH (NIH, 2022). Their activity is tightly regulated by hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting hormones as well as feedback loops from peripheral endocrine glands. Pathological conditions involving these cells often manifest as hypersecretion, such as in pituitary adenomas, or hyposecretion, leading to systemic metabolic and reproductive disorders (PubMed, 2021). Pharmacological intervention usually targets specific receptors on these cells, such as somatostatin or dopamine receptors, to normalize hormone levels or reduce tumor size (Endocrine Society, 2020). Because this entry refers to a cell population rather than a specific molecule, it is classified as a biological site of action rather than a single therapeutic target.
