Anthracycline Antibiotics

Molecular classification
Cytotoxic Antibiotic, Antitumor Agent, DNA Intercalator, Topoisomerase II Inhibitor, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Generator
01

Overview

Anthracycline antibiotics are a class of cytotoxic agents derived from Streptomyces bacteria, used primarily in cancer chemotherapy. They exert their effects through DNA intercalation, topoisomerase II inhibition, and the generation of reactive oxygen species, leading to cell death. While highly effective against many cancers, their use is limited by significant side effects, particularly cardiotoxicity.
