Anthrax protective antigen (PA) is a protein component of the anthrax toxin produced by Bacillus anthracis. It is essential for the pathogenicity of anthrax as it mediates the entry of lethal factor (LF) and edema factor (EF) into host cells. PA binds to host cell receptors, undergoes cleavage and oligomerization, and forms a pore in endosomal membranes to translocate LF and EF into the cytosol. PA is the major immunogen in current anthrax vaccines.
