Anti-inflammatory mediators are a diverse group of molecules that actively suppress, resolve, or limit the inflammatory response in tissues. They counteract the effects of pro-inflammatory mediators to restore tissue homeostasis after injury or infection. These include cytokines like IL-10 and specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators like lipoxins, resolvins, protectins and maresins. Their mechanisms of action include inhibition of pro-inflammatory pathways and promotion of resolution through processes such as efferocytosis. Dysregulation of these mediators contributes to chronic inflammatory diseases.
Varies depending on the specific mediator. Examples include inhibition of NF-kB pathway (IL-10), promotion of efferocytosis and inhibition of neutrophil infiltration (Lipoxins, Resolvins), and modulation of COX enzymes (Aspirin-triggered lipoxins).
