Antibodies (immunoglobulins) are Y-shaped glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes of the adaptive immune system that specifically bind unique antigens, typically found on pathogens. Pathogen-specific antibodies are those that are generated in response to a particular infectious agent and recognize one or more of its antigens with high specificity. They confer immunity by neutralizing pathogens, promoting their elimination via opsonization and complement activation, and establishing immunological memory for rapid response upon re-exposure. Numerous monoclonal antibodies have been developed as therapeutics to target pathogen antigens in infectious and autoimmune diseases, but "pathogen-specific antibodies" is not the name of a single molecular entity, rather a functional description of the diverse antibodies generated to combat specific pathogens.
