Target intelligence / Profile preview
An **antibody-coated target cell** refers to any cell that has been opsonized—coated on its surface—with specific antibodies. This coating marks the cell for destruction via immune mechanisms such as antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (**ADCC**). In ADCC, effector cells of the immune system—most notably natural killer (**NK**) cells, but also macrophages, neutrophils, and eosinophils—recognize these antibody-tagged cells through their Fc gamma receptors (**FcγRs**), particularly CD16/FcγRIII. Upon recognition and binding to the Fc region of the attached antibody, these effector cells release cytotoxic molecules like perforin and granzymes that induce lysis or apoptosis in the target cell[1][2][3][4]. This process plays an important role in controlling infections by eliminating virus-infected or otherwise abnormal host cells and is also exploited therapeutically in cancer immunotherapy using monoclonal antibodies designed to bind tumor-associated antigens[3]. However, "antibody-coated target cell" does not refer to a specific molecule or receptor but rather describes any biological cell that has become coated with antibodies. Therefore, it should not be considered a canonical therapeutic target itself. There may be confusion because this term describes an immunological state rather than an individual protein or receptor; thus it does not fit standard molecular classification schemes for drug targets such as receptors or enzymes.
