Overview

The humoral immune response is a key component of the adaptive immune system responsible for identifying and neutralizing extracellular pathogens and toxins through the production of highly specific antibodies by B lymphocytes. This process includes the activation of B cells by antigens, differentiation into plasma cells that secrete antibodies, and the formation of memory B cells for rapid response to future exposures. Antibodies produced during the humoral response can neutralize pathogens directly, opsonize them for phagocytic uptake, or activate the complement cascade to aid in pathogen elimination. The humoral immune response is distinct from cell-mediated immunity, which relies on T cells and does not involve the production of antibodies.
