Target
Ag7
Molecular classification
Antigen, Parasitic protein

Overview

Antigen 7 (Ag7), often referred to as Low molecular weight antigen 7, is a small immunodominant protein identified primarily in Leishmania species. It plays a significant role in the host's immune recognition during infection, serving as a target for both humoral and cellular immune responses. Due to its high conservation across various Leishmania strains and its ability to elicit a strong Th1-type immune response, it has been extensively studied as a candidate for subunit vaccines and as a diagnostic marker for visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. In a therapeutic context, Ag7 is not a target for traditional small-molecule drugs but is a focal point for immunotherapeutic strategies and vaccine design aimed at preventing or controlling parasitic load. Its small size and stable structure make it an ideal candidate for recombinant expression and use in standardized diagnostic kits to detect anti-Leishmania antibodies in clinical samples.
