Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that play a central role in initiating and regulating immune responses through antigen presentation to T lymphocytes. They bridge innate and adaptive immunity, activating naïve T cells and determining whether an immune response or tolerance is induced. DCs capture, process, and present antigens via MHC class I and II molecules, activating CD8+ and CD4+ T cells, respectively. They are crucial for vaccine efficacy and are targeted in immunotherapies for cancer, infectious diseases, transplantation, and autoimmune disorders. However, due to their potent immunostimulatory function, safety concerns include the risk of cytokine storms and autoimmunity. Antigen presentation is the process and not a single target, but rather a series of steps. Targeting this process is a key element of modern immunotherapy.
