Antigen-presenting cell (APC) activation via sublethal infection refers to the process by which APCs—such as dendritic cells, macrophages, and B cells—are stimulated by exposure to a pathogen at levels insufficient to cause host death but sufficient to trigger an immune response. This mechanism is crucial for initiating adaptive immunity and shaping the host's ability to control infections without succumbing to disease. APCs capture, process, and present antigens from pathogens on their surface using MHC proteins and costimulatory molecules, leading to T cell activation and adaptive immunity. This process can be modulated by targeting pathogen recognition receptors (PRRs) like Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and downstream signaling pathways.
