Target intelligence / Profile preview
Antigen-presenting cell (APC) modulation refers to the therapeutic manipulation of cells like dendritic cells, macrophages, and B cells to regulate the immune system's response to specific antigens. APCs play a fundamental role in bridging innate and adaptive immunity by capturing and processing antigens, which they then present via Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules to T cell receptors (Janeway et al., 2001, NCBI). In oncology and vaccine development, modulation strategies often involve activating APCs using Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists or CD40 antibodies to increase co-stimulatory signal expression (e.g., CD80, CD86) and trigger robust T cell responses (StatPearls, 2023). Conversely, in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and transplant rejection, the goal is to induce tolerogenic APCs that suppress self-reactive immune responses. Because the term describes a broad biological process involving a variety of surface receptors and intracellular pathways rather than a single protein or molecule, it is considered a therapeutic mechanism rather than a specific molecular target (PubMed, 2022).
Modification of the functional state of antigen-presenting cells to either enhance or suppress the activation of the adaptive immune system by regulating antigen processing, MHC-peptide presentation, and co-stimulatory signal expression.
