Overview

Antimicrobial compound production refers to the biosynthetic processes by which organisms (most notably bacteria, fungi, and some plants and animals) synthesize a wide array of molecules that inhibit the growth of competing or pathogenic microorganisms[1][2][3][4]. These molecules include bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides, polyketides, non-ribosomal peptides, volatile metabolites, and other bioactive secondary metabolites. The biosynthesis involves complex gene clusters and regulatory pathways, often related to stress responses, quorum sensing, and nutrient competition. Many of these natural products form the basis of therapeutic antimicrobials (e.g., antibiotics such as penicillins and vancomycin, antifungals, and antiprotozoals)[1][3][7]. Classification can be by chemical structure, biosynthetic pathway, or molecular target. Mechanisms of antimicrobial action are diverse, including inhibition of cell wall synthesis, membrane disruption, inhibition of protein or nucleic acid synthesis, and interference with microbial metabolic pathways[2][3][4][6][7].
