The term "Antioxidant state" does not refer to a single molecule or receptor but rather describes the collective ability of cells and tissues to counteract oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species and free radicals. This protective function involves both enzymatic systems—such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidases—and non-enzymatic molecules like glutathione, vitamins C and E.
