The aorta is the largest artery in the human body, emerging from the left ventricle of the heart and branching into several sections: the aortic root, ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending aorta, and abdominal aorta[5][7]. Its primary function is to deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs throughout the body, making every part of the organism dependent on its integrity[1][7]. The aortic wall is composed of three layers: the intima (innermost), media (middle, mainly smooth muscle and elastic fibers), and adventitia (outer), with structural features that confer elasticity and strength needed to withstand the high pressure of blood flow[2][6]. Conditions affecting the aorta include aortic aneurysm, dissection, atherosclerosis, vasculitis, and genetic connective tissue disorders, often leading to life-threatening cardiovascular complications[3][7][8]. The aorta is not a molecule, receptor, or enzyme but is classified structurally as a vessel and described in pathology and physiology contexts, rather than as a drug target.
