Overview

AP-1 complex subunit gamma-like 2 (AP1G2) is a large subunit of the adaptor protein complex 1 (AP-1), which functions predominantly in vesicle trafficking between the trans-Golgi network, endosomes, and the plasma membrane. AP1G2 is a gamma-adaptin family protein that participates in the formation of clathrin-coated vesicles and is crucial for the proper sorting and delivery of membrane proteins. The AP-1 complex is a heterotetramer consisting of two large (gamma, beta1), one medium (mu1), and one small (sigma1) subunit. AP1G2 provides unique gamma-2 adaptin functionality to certain AP-1 complexes, possibly mediating specialized trafficking roles or regulation in mammalian cells. It is involved in protein sorting in late endosomes and multivesicular bodies, including interactions with ESCRT machinery components. While AP1G2 is crucial for cellular physiology, especially for vesicle transport, it is not currently a therapeutic target and has no direct disease or drug associations
