Aphakia is a clinical condition characterized by the absence of the eye’s natural lens, typically due to surgical removal for cataract (the most common cause), congenital developmental anomalies, or traumatic injury. Without the lens, the eye loses its ability to focus properly, leading to significant visual impairment, including severe farsightedness (hyperopia), loss of accommodation, blurred vision, and disturbances in color perception. Aphakia is commonly managed by optical correction using intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, aphakic contact lenses, or (less commonly) high-powered spectacles. Untreated, aphakia can be associated with complications such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and intolerance to optical correction[1][3][5][7].
