Apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) is a key protein expressed by the invasive merozoite form of Plasmodium species, most notably *Plasmodium falciparum*. AMA1 plays a central and essential role in the invasion of host erythrocytes (red blood cells), making it a critical factor for parasite survival during the blood stage of infection. It interacts with RON2 to form the moving junction during invasion.
Inhibition of AMA1-RON2 interaction disrupts moving junction formation, blocking erythrocyte invasion.
