Overview

Apisimin is a 54-amino acid, serine- and valine-rich peptide primarily found in the royal jelly of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) [1, 2]. It serves a critical structural role as a component of the "apisin" complex, where it acts as a molecular bridge between dimers of Major Royal Jelly Protein 1 (MRJP1) [1, 9]. This complex undergoes pH-dependent polymerization to form a fibrous network that increases the viscosity of royal jelly, ensuring that honeybee larvae remain securely attached to their cells [1, 9]. Beyond its structural function, apisimin exhibits significant immunostimulatory properties, notably the ability to trigger the release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) from human monocytes [3, 4]. It also exhibits synergistic effects with plant-derived arabinogalactan proteins found in honey, enhancing their collective immune-modulating activity [3, 4]. While not currently utilized as a primary therapeutic target for pharmaceutical drugs, apisimin is a key bioactive constituent contributing to the medicinal and nutritional value of royal jelly and honey [3, 7].

Mechanism of action

Apisimin functions as a structural linker in the apisin complex, facilitating the formation of a pH-dependent fiber network in royal jelly [1, 9].
