Overview

Apolipoprotein A refers to a group of structurally related proteins that are key components of lipoproteins, which transport lipids (fats) in the blood. The most clinically significant members are Apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) and Apolipoprotein A-II (apoA-II). ApoA-I is the major structural and functional protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and promotes reverse cholesterol transport. ApoA-II is the second most abundant protein in HDL after apoA-I and plays a role in HDL structure and remodeling. Deficiency or mutations in APOA1 gene can lead to familial HDL deficiencies. Low levels of apoA-I are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
