Apolipoprotein B mRNA (ApoB mRNA)

Target
ApoB mRNA
Molecular classification
mRNA, Apolipoprotein, Lipoprotein component
01

Overview

Apolipoprotein B mRNA is the transcript produced from the APOB gene, encoding apolipoprotein B. Editing of this mRNA results in two main protein isoforms: ApoB100 (full-length) and ApoB48 (truncated). ApoB100, synthesized in the liver, is essential for VLDL and LDL assembly and cholesterol delivery. ApoB48, produced in the intestine, is required for chylomicron formation and dietary triglyceride transport. High levels of ApoB-containing particles are a major risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. While the mRNA itself is not typically directly targeted, its expression and editing are regulated, and therapies targeting its translation (e.g., antisense oligonucleotides) are under development.
