Apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like 4 (APOBEC4) is a protein encoded by the APOBEC4 gene in humans and belongs to the AID/APOBEC family of polynucleotide (deoxy)cytidine deaminases[1][2][3][4]. Unlike other family members with confirmed C-to-U deamination and roles in mRNA editing or antiviral immunity, APOBEC4 lacks detectable cytidine deaminase activity in vitro and shows only weak single-stranded DNA binding[2]. APOBEC4 is primarily expressed in the testis and hypothesized to be involved in transcriptional regulation rather than classical RNA/DNA editing[2][3][4]. There is evidence that APOBEC4 can enhance the replication of HIV-1 by promoting viral promoter activity, but its physiological targets and disease links remain unclear[1][2]. No approved drugs or clinical biomarkers are currently associated with APOBEC4, and it is not considered an established therapeutic target.
