Apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme catalytic subunit 3H (APOBEC3H) is a cytidine deaminase enzyme that belongs to the APOBEC3 family and plays a role in innate antiviral immunity by inducing C-to-U transitions in viral genomes, thereby restricting the replication of retroviruses like HIV-1. APOBEC3H is expressed in human cells and varies in activity and localization due to polymorphisms and alternative splicing, which influence its antiviral potency and its association with disease susceptibility and mutational profiles in cancers. While it shares its family name with the apolipoprotein B mRNA editing system, APOBEC3H does not edit apolipoprotein B mRNA in humans—this function is carried out by APOBEC1 in conjunction with specific cofactors. Research interest surrounds its potential contributions to cancer mutagenesis and innate viral defense, but as of now, no therapeutics directly target APOBEC3H clinically.
