Apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB100)

Target
ApoB100
Molecular classification
Lipoprotein, Structural protein
01

Overview

Apolipoprotein B100 (apoB100) is a large glycoprotein essential for lipid and cholesterol metabolism. It is the primary structural and functional protein component of LDL, facilitating LDL receptor-mediated endocytosis and playing a key role in the development of atherosclerosis. Measurement of apoB levels is used to assess cardiovascular risk and diagnose hypercholesterolemia. It is a therapeutic target for lipid-lowering medications.

Mechanism of action

Statins: HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, reduce cholesterol synthesis. Ezetimibe: Inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption. PCSK9 inhibitors: Increase LDL receptor availability. Mipomersen: Antisense oligonucleotide, inhibits apoB100 synthesis. Lomitapide: Inhibits microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTTP), reduces VLDL secretion.
