Target intelligence / Profile preview

Apolipoprotein C-III (APOC3)

Target
APOC3
Molecular classification
Apolipoprotein
01

Overview

Apolipoprotein C-III is a central regulator of human triglyceride metabolism. It inhibits lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase activity, delays clearance of TG-rich particles from plasma, and promotes VLDL assembly/secretion in hepatocytes. Elevated apoC-III is associated with increased triglycerides, dyslipidemia, inflammation, atherosclerosis, and higher cardiovascular disease risk. Conversely, genetic or pharmacologic reduction lowers these risks significantly.
