Apolipoprotein E (ApoE)

Target
ApoE
Molecular classification
Lipoprotein, Apolipoprotein
01

Overview

Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a multifunctional protein that plays central roles in lipid metabolism, neurobiology, and the pathogenesis of several diseases, most notably cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. It mediates binding of lipoproteins or lipid complexes to specific cell-surface receptors, facilitating their internalization and clearance from plasma. It is essential for cholesterol transport among cells in various tissues and is the principal cholesterol carrier in the brain. It is also involved in injury repair within the central nervous system and modulates cellular processes such as cytoskeletal assembly/stability, mitochondrial function, and dendritic morphology/function.
