Overview

The Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) Christchurch variant is a rare genetic mutation in the APOE gene, characterized by an arginine-to-serine substitution at position 136 (R136S). This variant alters receptor binding properties and modulates microglial and astrocyte responses, leading to potential protection against Alzheimer's disease by suppressing tau propagation and reducing astrocyte reactivity. It was first identified in a patient with type III hyperlipoproteinemia from Christchurch, New Zealand. Recent research suggests APOE Christchurch‐mimetic therapeutic antibody reduces APOE aggregation.
