Target intelligence / Profile preview
Apoptosis and Immune Signaling Pathways encompass the complex networks of molecular interactions that govern programmed cell death and the activation of the immune system (StatPearls, 2023). Apoptosis is a critical mechanism for maintaining tissue homeostasis by eliminating damaged or infected cells through the activation of caspases and the BCL-2 family of proteins (NIH, 2024). Immune signaling pathways, including the NF-kB and JAK/STAT pathways, regulate the recruitment and activity of leukocytes in response to pathogens or malignant cells (PubMed, 2022). These pathways are frequently dysregulated in diseases like cancer, where cells evade apoptosis, and autoimmune disorders, where immune signaling is hyperactive (Nature Reviews Cancer, 2021). While not a single therapeutic target, many specific proteins within these pathways, such as BCL-2, PD-1, and various kinases, serve as critical focal points for drug development (FDA, 2023). Therapeutic intervention in these pathways aims to either restore apoptotic sensitivity in tumor cells or modulate immune responses to treat inflammatory and oncological conditions.
Pharmacological modulation of specific protein nodes within these pathways to either induce programmed cell death in malignant cells or regulate immune cell activity and cytokine production.
