Apoptosis Inducing Factor 1 (AIFM1)

Target
AIFM1
Molecular classification

Overview

Apoptosis Inducing Factor 1 (AIFM1) is a flavoprotein located in the mitochondrial intermembrane space. It plays a dual role in cellular physiology: it is essential for mitochondrial respiratory function under normal conditions and acts as a key effector of caspase-independent programmed cell death (apoptosis) when cells are exposed to apoptotic stimuli.

02

Mechanism of action

AIFM1, upon apoptotic insult, translocates to the nucleus where it induces chromatin condensation and large-scale DNA fragmentation independently of caspases.
