An apoptosis mediator is any molecule, protein, or factor that plays a central role in the regulation and execution of apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis and eliminating damaged or unwanted cells. Apoptosis mediators include receptors, signaling proteins, enzymes (notably caspases), mitochondrial factors, and regulatory molecules. These molecules orchestrate the initiation and progression of cell death via intrinsic (mitochondrial) and extrinsic (death receptor) pathways, ultimately converging on the activation of caspases, which dismantle cellular components. Their dysregulation contributes to cancer development/resistance, autoimmune diseases, and neurodegeneration.
