Apoptosis regulator BAK (BCL2 antagonist/killer 1, gene symbol: BAK1) is a pro-apoptotic member of the BCL-2 protein family. It plays a central role in the intrinsic (mitochondrial) pathway of apoptosis by promoting mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP), which is a critical step leading to programmed cell death. Defective regulation or expression levels of BAK are implicated in various cancers, while excessive activity may contribute to degenerative diseases.
Promotes mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization and cytochrome c release, triggering caspase activation and cell death.
