An apoptosis stimulant is any molecule, ligand, or agent that promotes or triggers the process of apoptosis—programmed cell death—in cells. It acts by activating one or more molecular pathways (extrinsic/intrinsic) that culminate in cell death. These agents are crucial in removing damaged, infected, or potentially cancerous cells, shaping tissues during development, and regulating immune responses. Examples include TRAIL, FasL, TNF-alpha and chemotherapeutic drugs.
Activates extrinsic (death receptor) or intrinsic (mitochondrial) apoptotic pathways, leading to caspase activation and cell death. Some agents act through alternative pathways like granzyme/perforin or calcium influx.
