Overview

Apoptosis-stimulating of p53 protein 2 (ASPP2) is a regulatory protein encoded by the TP53BP2 gene in humans[1][6]. It interacts with the tumor suppressor protein p53 (TP53), promoting apoptosis by enhancing p53's ability to activate pro-apoptotic gene expression[1][2][5]. ASPP2 binds wild-type p53 and several other pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins, such as Bcl-2, p63, and p73, thereby influencing cell growth, apoptosis, and tumorigenesis. Its expression is found in numerous human tissues, with highest levels in skeletal tissue[1]. ASPP2 is implicated as a tumor suppressor in various cancers and is considered significant in cancer prognosis due to its regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and metastasis[2]. The mRNA form (TP53BP2 mRNA) is the transcript encoding ASPP2; the protein product is the actual therapeutic target.
