Apoptotic cell membrane changes refer to a series of biochemical and structural modifications that occur in the plasma membrane of cells undergoing apoptosis (programmed cell death). These changes are critical for the recognition, engulfment, and non-inflammatory clearance of dying cells by phagocytes. Key features include loss of membrane asymmetry (phosphatidylserine exposure), membrane blebbing, formation of apoptotic bodies, increased membrane permeability, and cytoskeletal degradation. Caspases and the RhoA/ROCK pathway are key molecular regulators. These changes ensure efficient recognition and non-inflammatory removal by the immune system while preventing unwanted immune responses through containment within intact membranes until clearance is complete.
