Overview

Apoptotic cell membrane changes refer to a series of biochemical and structural modifications that occur in the plasma membrane of cells undergoing apoptosis (programmed cell death). These changes are critical for the recognition, engulfment, and non-inflammatory clearance of dying cells by phagocytes. Key features include loss of membrane asymmetry (phosphatidylserine exposure), membrane blebbing, formation of apoptotic bodies, increased membrane permeability, and cytoskeletal degradation.
