Overview

The apoptotic process, or apoptosis, is a fundamental biological mechanism of programmed cell death characterized by distinct morphological changes and energy-dependent biochemical pathways (StatPearls, 2023). It plays a critical role in embryonic development, immune system function, and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis by eliminating aged, damaged, or potentially harmful cells (NIH, 2024). Dysregulation of apoptosis is a hallmark of various pathologies; for instance, the evasion of apoptosis is a core feature of cancer, while excessive apoptosis contributes to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease (Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, 2011). Pharmacological intervention typically focuses on modulating specific proteins within the apoptotic pathway, such as the BCL-2 family or caspases, to either trigger cell death in tumors or preserve cell viability in degenerative conditions (PubMed, 2022). As a therapeutic strategy, inducing apoptosis requires careful management to avoid systemic toxicity and conditions like tumor lysis syndrome (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2018). Modern drug discovery often targets the intrinsic or extrinsic pathways to overcome resistance in hematologic and solid malignancies (Cell Death & Disease, 2020).
