A satiating agent is a functional category of molecules, hormones, or pharmacological compounds that induce a feeling of fullness (satiety) and reduce food intake. Historically, specific substances like "satietin," a 50kDa glycopeptide found in serum, were proposed as primary satiating agents, though modern research focuses on the complex interplay of multiple gut-brain hormones (nih.gov, 1984). Because the term refers to a broad class of substances with diverse molecular targets rather than a single receptor or enzyme, it is considered a functional classification rather than a specific therapeutic target.
Satiating agents act by stimulating specific receptors in the central nervous system (e.g., GLP-1 receptor, Amylin receptor, Melanocortin 4 receptor) or the peripheral nervous system to signal fullness and reduce hunger. They often delay gastric emptying and modulate the release of other metabolic hormones.
