Aquaporin-1 (AQP1)

Target
AQP1
Molecular classification
Aquaporin, Major Intrinsic Protein (MIP), Transporter, Ion Channel (cGMP-gated)
01

Overview

Aquaporin-1 (AQP1) is a water channel protein that facilitates the rapid transport of water across cell membranes. It forms a homotetramer, with each monomer acting as an independent pore. AQP1 is highly expressed in the kidney, red blood cells, vascular endothelium, and other tissues, where it plays a crucial role in maintaining water balance. It also functions as a non-selective cation channel when gated by cGMP. Dysregulation of AQP1 is associated with various diseases, including nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and certain types of edema.
