Overview

Aquaporin-10 (AQP10) is a member of the aquaglyceroporin subgroup of the aquaporin family of membrane transport proteins. It is primarily expressed in the small intestine and adipose tissue. AQP10 functions as a channel facilitating the transport of water, glycerol, and small neutral solutes, with unique pH-dependent gating regulating glycerol permeability in human adipocytes. Dysfunction or modulation of AQP10 has been identified as relevant to fat metabolism, particularly by mediating glycerol release during lipolysis, and may present a novel therapeutic target for obesity and related metabolic diseases. In the gastrointestinal tract, AQP10 may contribute to fluid and nutrient balance, though its specific roles in pathology are less well-studied compared to other aquaporins. No direct drugs or biomarkers are clinically established, but its structure-function relationship suggests therapeutic interest in metabolic regulation.
