Overview

Aquaporin 12A (AQP12A) is a member of the aquaporin family of transmembrane channel proteins that facilitate water transport across cell membranes[2][5][8][9]. AQP12A is classified as an unorthodox aquaporin based on sequence and functional characteristics, with localization reported primarily to intracellular compartments in the pancreas in mammals[2]. Like other aquaporins, AQP12A is predicted to form tetramers, with each monomer comprising six transmembrane helical domains and two conserved NPA-like motifs that are structurally adapted for selective water (and potentially other small solute) movement[2][8]. The biological role of AQP12A in humans is not yet fully understood, but it may contribute to the regulation of water handling in specific tissues, and in zebrafish, an ortholog is implicated in the cellular response to estrogen stimulus[1]. There are currently no established disease associations, therapeutic drugs, or known safety concerns linked specifically to AQP12A.
