Target intelligence / Profile preview

Aquaporin-12B (AQP12B)

Target
AQP12B
Molecular classification
Transporter, Channel protein, Aquaporin family, Major intrinsic protein superfamily
01

Overview

Aquaporin-12B is a putative member of the aquaporin family, predicted to function as a water channel involved in transmembrane water transport. It is thought to form homotetrameric channels in the plasma membrane, where each monomer may independently facilitate osmotically driven water transport. The protein is predicted to localize primarily to intracellular membranes, and its gene is expressed in various tissues at low levels. Aquaporin-12B’s precise biological role in human physiology and pathophysiology remains unclear, and there is currently no evidence it is directly involved in human disease nor targeted by approved therapeutics or experimental drugs. Its closest paralog is Aquaporin-12A. Alternative names include INSSA3 (insulin synthesis associated 3), though its role in insulin synthesis has not been clearly defined.
