Overview

Aquarius intron-binding spliceosomal factor (AQR) is a highly conserved RNA helicase essential for RNA processing and genome integrity. It is involved in pre-mRNA splicing as part of the U2-type spliceosome, providing ATP-dependent helicase activity to facilitate proper RNA maturation. It also serves roles in DNA repair by processing R-loops, affecting homologous recombination and the expression of key DNA repair factors such as CtIP. Aquarius interacts directly with small RNA silencing complexes, thereby contributing to co-transcriptional gene silencing of transposable elements. Dysregulation of AQR can lead to genome instability and is implicated in diseases including cancer and diabetes[1][2][4][5][6].
