Overview

The term Aqueous humor flow protein does not refer to a single canonical protein but rather describes the physiological process of aqueous humor dynamics, which is regulated by a complex network of enzymes, receptors, and transporters. Aqueous humor is a clear fluid produced by the ciliary body epithelium that circulates through the anterior segment of the eye to provide nourishment to avascular tissues like the lens and cornea while maintaining intraocular pressure (IOP). Key proteins involved in its production include Carbonic anhydrase II (CA2), Na+/K+-ATPase, and Beta-2 adrenergic receptors, while its drainage is regulated by the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways involving proteins such as Myocilin and Rho kinase. Dysregulation of these flow-regulating proteins leads to elevated IOP, the primary modifiable risk factor for glaucoma. Pharmacological intervention typically targets these specific proteins to either decrease fluid production or increase outflow to prevent optic nerve damage.
