Aqueous Humor Production

Molecular classification
Physiological process
01

Overview

Aqueous humor production is the physiological process by which the eye generates aqueous humor, a clear fluid that fills the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye. This process is essential for maintaining intraocular pressure, providing nutrients to avascular ocular tissues (such as the lens and cornea), and removing metabolic waste. The primary site of production is the non-pigmented epithelial cells of the ciliary body. It involves diffusion, ultrafiltration, and active secretion, with the latter being the dominant mechanism. Key enzymes and transporters include Na+/K+-ATPase, carbonic anhydrases, and aquaporins. Production is regulated by the autonomic nervous system and is a target for anti-glaucoma medications.
