Overview

ALOX15P1 (arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase pseudogene 1) is a pseudogene located on human chromosome 17. It is annotated as a non-functional DNA segment related to the functional gene ALOX15, which encodes the enzyme 15-lipoxygenase-1. While the functional ALOX15 gene is involved in arachidonic acid metabolism and production of lipid mediators influencing inflammation and immunity, ALOX15P1 itself does not encode a functional enzyme. There is no evidence that ALOX15P1 is expressed or has a direct biological function; it is not considered a molecular drug target and does not participate in catalysis or signaling typical of active enzymes, receptors, transporters, or transcription factors. Much of the literature and gene annotation will refer to the functional ALOX15 (arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase, abbreviation: ALOX15 or 15-LOX-1), which is a bona fide enzyme and a target of interest in inflammation and disease research. However, ALOX15P1 is a non-functional pseudogene, not a canonical target relevant for drug discovery or mechanism-of-action studies. Some sources appear to confuse ALOX15P1 and ALOX15, but only ALOX15 is a target enzyme; ALOX15P1 itself is not. If you are interested in the active enzyme, you should refer to "arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase" (ALOX15), not the pseudogene ALOX15P1.
