Arginase is a manganese-dependent metalloenzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-arginine to L-ornithine and urea. It plays a crucial role in the urea cycle for ammonia detoxification and is also involved in the synthesis of polyamines and proline. Dysregulation of arginase is implicated in various diseases, including hyperargininemia, cardiovascular dysfunction, renal disease, and immune dysregulation. There are two main isoforms: Arginase I (cytoplasmic/liver) and Arginase II (mitochondrial/kidney, etc.).
