ARG2 pseudogene 1 is a noncoding, nonfunctional DNA sequence that closely resembles the functional gene for Arginase 2 (ARG2) but does not produce a functional protein or possess enzymatic activity. It is a classified pseudogene, originating from a duplication or retrotransposition event involving the original ARG2 gene, and subsequently lost its ability to encode functional protein due to disabling mutations such as frameshifts and premature stop codons. Pseudogenes generally do not produce functional protein products and are not considered classical drug targets, but may rarely impact gene regulation through RNA-mediated mechanisms in some cases. ARG2P1 is not known to be involved in any disease processes or to serve as a biomarker. It is mostly recognized as a genomic artifact resulting from gene duplication or retrotransposition that subsequently lost its coding potential. The functional paralog, Arginase 2 (ARG2), is a mitochondrial enzyme involved in the urea cycle and arginine metabolism, but ARG2P1 itself does not contribute to these enzymatic functions. There is no evidence that ARG2P1 is used in diagnostics, therapy, or research as a clinical or pharmacological target.
