01

Overview

The Arginine–fluoride ionic complex is a chemical association formed between the cationic guanidinium group of the amino acid L-arginine and the anionic fluoride ion. Primarily utilized in advanced oral care products such as toothpastes and varnishes, this complex is considered a therapeutic agent rather than a biological target like a receptor or enzyme. It functions through a synergistic mechanism where the arginine component serves as a prebiotic substrate for beneficial arginolytic bacteria, which produce ammonia via the Arginine Deiminase System (ADS) to neutralize plaque acidity. Simultaneously, the complex enhances the delivery and bioavailability of fluoride at the tooth surface, promoting the formation of acid-resistant fluorapatite and the remineralization of enamel. Additionally, the complex helps alleviate dentin hypersensitivity by facilitating the physical occlusion of exposed dentin tubules.

Mechanism of action

The complex facilitates the delivery of fluoride to the tooth surface while arginine is metabolized by the Arginine Deiminase System (ADS) to produce ammonia, which raises the local pH, neutralizes plaque acids, and promotes enamel remineralization.
